The Desert Asks for Nothing
White dunes under a storm sky, a full moon over red rock, light finding its way down a sandstone canyon. These are quiet places with room to breathe — and, for an ocean photographer, not so far from the sea: sand that began on an ancient sea floor, canyons carved by water, stone that curls like a breaking wave.
The Dune Collection
Four photographs made on Aaron's journey to White Sands, New Mexico, where the white gypsum dunes take on every shade of the sky.
Into the Canyons
Below the desert floor, the slot canyons are carved by water and lit from above. Light falls in narrow shafts and bounces from wall to wall, turning the sandstone plum, orange and red.
Rattlesnake Canyon
A narrow passage near Page, its walls purple in shadow and red where the light reaches them. By the end of the passage it glows like a lamp left on.

Stone Wave
Sandstone rises from the canyon floor, curls over and hollows beneath, the light falling through it in bands of pink, orange and deep red.

Shelter
An arch spans the passage, plum in the shadows and gold where the light finds it. Under its arch, the world goes quiet.

Moab Moon
Twilight over the La Sal Mountains, the landscape gone to blue. The moon rises gold above the ridge, and the red rock below has gone still for the night. A long lens brings it close enough to rest on the mountains.
