Ahead of the Storm
The sand at White Sands began in the sea.
In southern New Mexico, the largest gypsum dunefield on Earth runs white to the mountains. The wind moves it the way the ocean moves water — in ripples, ridges and long, slow swells. Aaron arrived ahead of a storm. As the clouds came in, the dunes took on their color, and the whole dunefield turned to blue.

"As a teenager, I was completely enamored with Frank Herbert's Dune novels, and they fueled a lot of the imagination behind my travels. All this time, traveling the world, I had never been to the White Sands dunes in New Mexico. So I set out in front of a storm to capture them — and came home with a magical set of images."

The Gathering
A storm sky hangs over the dunes, deep indigo above and white gypsum below, with wind ripples running toward a soft horizon. The air carries the smell of rain that hasn't fallen yet.

The Storm
The storm bank settles over the dunefield, and the white sand takes on the color of the clouds. The light goes soft and even, and the quiet is the kind that slows the breath.

Dune Rain
The Rain
A column of rain falls between the dunes and the distant mountains while the sand in front stays dry and bright. The storm is far enough away to watch and close enough to feel. For a few minutes, the whole desert holds its breath.

The Clearing
Then, open sky. Sunlight rakes across the ridges and long blue shadows fall along their crests — room to breathe, to think and to be.
