Nautilus

Ultra Rare edition of 50. Exceptional Appreciation Potential.

The Story Behind Nautilus

“This image has been decades in the making. Nautilus captures a rare, spectacular moment when a massive king tide and powerful swell collided on a remote Pacific Northwest coastline. The backwash exploded skyward against black cliffs, creating towering, sculptural forms that spiraled like the chambers of a nautilus shell—raw power and delicate beauty frozen in one unforgettable frame.”

— Aaron Chang

Some images stay with you forever because everything has to align perfectly for them to exist. Nautilus is one of those—and one of the most treasured photographs I have ever made.

I had watched this desolate stretch of Pacific Northwest coastline for years. After a lifetime chasing swells, I knew it held something extraordinary if a massive swell and a king tide ever met at the right moment. When the forecasts finally lined up, my son Saxon and I flew to Seattle and drove straight to the coast.

The first day was crowded with photographers. The surf was powerful but missing that spark of magic. That night we decided to rise before sunrise. We arrived to an empty beach and stayed alone the entire day.

The ocean delivered. As the king tide flooded in, the backwash collided with incoming waves, sending explosions of white water rocking the ground. Wave after wave slammed into the black cliffs, shooting skyward in towering, sculptural forms. The Pacific performed with a beauty and power I had never seen.

Then the light broke through at the perfect angle, illuminating the surging water against the dark rock. I framed the shot as the explosion took on the graceful, spiraling layers of a chambered nautilus shell—nature repeating its most elegant design on a monumental scale.

Nautilus is untamed, unsurfable, and completely wild. Yet it captures an almost impossible balance of raw power and delicate artistry. It remains one of my favorite images. A perfect reminder that sometimes you just need to show up early and let the ocean reveal what it’s been saving for you.

About the Finish

Our Premum Gallery Finish: Acrylic Medium

Our signature finish — and the gold standard of the gallery — is photographic paper face-mounted to acrylic. Optically printed onto Fuji Crystal Archival paper with a pearlescent base, this medium is extraordinarily reflective of light, producing the richest, most vibrant color achievable in photographic fine art. Colors shift and radiate according to the light source: they truly come alive. The back is fitted with a recessed frame that mounts to a cleat or z-bar, giving the print a stunning floating appearance off the wall. This is the finish Aaron uses for 95% of his gallery work — and the one we recommend for every serious collector.

  • This medium is optically printed onto Fuji Crystal Archival paper Pearlescent base on Fuji paper is reflective of light
  • The richest, most vibrant color technically possible. The result: colors light up and lay down according to the light source. They truly come alive
  • Our most vibrant medium
  • The back frame is a recessed frame on the back of the print that mounts to a cleat or z-bar, for easy hanging
  • This gives a very beautiful and modern appearance of the print floating off the wall

A Note From Erika

Nautilus brings the raw power and majestic beauty of the wild Pacific straight into your home — a towering explosion of white water frozen mid-surge, spiraling skyward against dramatic black cliffs in the graceful form of a chambered nautilus shell.

Powerful yet elegant, untamed yet perfectly composed, this image captures a once-in-a-lifetime alignment of swell, tide, and light. It has become one of Aaron’s most treasured works and a favorite among ocean lovers and collectors alike.

We’ve now reached the final chapter. Nautilus is new to our Exclusive Editions and offers strong investment potential. Once the edition is complete, it will never be printed again.

We look forward to helping you bring home this iconic work that will be treasured for generations to come.
