Big Sur is one of those places with such a huge photographic legacy, that whenever I go there to shoot, I’m kind of haunted by the master’s works that I’ve grown up studying and wanting to emulate…
…so when I go to Big Sur, what I’m looking for is something on that level, something that will move the ball forward on the Big Sur photographic legacy.
Looking around, you have to become intimately familiar with the terrain and know it under all different circumstances, different light, different tides, different times of year.
On this particular day, I went to Big Sur with an entirely different photo in mind — one of a wave exploding then flowing down the rock with a waterfall-like motion. It was something that I’d been thinking about for a very long time…
For hours I tried to capture what I had envisioned in my mind…
… but it wasn’t until I was leaving that I heard a little voice saying “look left.”
I couldn’t believe the majesty and beauty of what was before me – like a coal-encrusted diamond presented on a silver platter.
What I love about this photo is that it combines some photographic techniques that you don’t often see in landscape photography where the water’s moving, and I really love the dynamic clash between the land and the sea.
This shot captures the grandeur of an eternal poetic moment and more importantly a profound life lesson…
Remember the importance of being in the moment instead of trying to create it.
It’s my hope that this image conveys the feeling of wild untamed beauty and freedom for the viewer…
… as well as a reminder to appreciate to the gifts that surround us, each and every day.
I’m proud to present my newest release simply titled Highway one.
