By Aaron Chang
People often ask me what my work is really like.
It sounds very romantic when it’s described as working on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world with the best surfers.
The reality though was quite different… for me, this was actually a job.
I put a lot of energy into everything I did. I showed up everyday — good surf or bad, trying to find a shot.
I was in the water everyday, sometimes all day.
Also, you were limited to 36 shots per roll of film. So when you went out to shoot it was a huge amount of energy to get out to the lineup, swim back in and do it all over again. Swimming in and out of the surf took a massive amount of energy!
The bottom line: I always showed up, did the work and put in the time…
… and from that effort, we were able to glean a few good images that advanced my career, drove magazine sales and made everyone happy!
When I look back at those years, it was a lot of hard work. Was it worth it? Absolutely!
